Fall in Beautiful Nauvoo

yellow leaves fall in historic nauvoo flatsHave you ever experienced fall in Nauvoo? It is quite beautiful. Actually, sometimes it is quite stunning. You know the kind of stunning I mean…..stop, mouth drops open and any words you might utter like “wow” or “beautiful” don’t match what you are seeing?

This photo captured what words can’t describe. Tom saw the fog that morning and rushed down to see what he could capture. With the sunrise filtering through the fog he got what he was looking for and more! If you could see the images taken just a few minutes later, you would have seen how quickly the scene changed. Timing, light and color are everything to a photographer…and it can literally change in a minute or two.

It is a favorite spot for our morning (or midday or evening!) walks in the historic area or “the flats” as the locals know it. There is a brick cobblestone sidewalk, concealed by a yellow leaf carpet, that leads one past the Tin Shop to the Old Post Office, John Taylor Home, and Print Shop. Browning’s Gun Shop is through the mist to the left.

Beautiful.

Santa’s Visit to Nauvoo

Christmas in Beautiful Nauvoo starts on Friday night with the tree lighting and activities down in the flats…….but it continues on Saturday with plenty of other activities for kids and families. One of these is a visit from Santa.

The kids get a chance to tell Santa what they are hoping to get for Christmas and have a photo taken. Since Tom was taking the photos, we were within ear shot to hear the replies to Santa’s questions. Our favorites were the replies to “Have you been nice to your brother?” met with a short silence, shoulder shrug, and wiggling of one hand as she said, “sort of.”

Some of the kids stared. Some cried. Some wavered then finally sat on Santa’s lap but all left happy. We had a blast watching the faces light up. Here a few of them:

If you haven’t been to Christmas in Beautiful Nauvoo, plan on it next year. Some of the other things-to-do include:

  • Cooking at the Nauvoo Log Cabins
  • Kris Kringle Craft and Vendor Show
  • Nativities Around the World
  • Nauvoo Fire Department Supper
  • The Messiah Performance at St Peter and Paul Church
  • Auctions, giveaways, and contests

Know what else is totally awesome? Carthage has their annual Christmas Open House on Thursday before and LaHarpe, a few miles up the road, has their “Country Christmas” (including a lighted parade) on Tuesday before Christmas in Nauvoo.

The towns around here may be small but they sure know how to celebrate…..

Tree Lighting Starts Historic Nauvoo Christmas Season

historic nauvoo christmas walk photos by tom simpson nauvoo lds photographerThe first weekend of December is a special one in Nauvoo. It’s the annual Christmas in Old Nauvoo, sometimes affectionately called the “Christmas Walk” that officially opens the season here.

There is music by the local high school band and chorus, special numbers by the missionaries, and a few songs for the entire crowd to sing along….but the main event is the lighting of the giant tree inside the Historic Nauvoo Visitor’s Center.

Lights are dimmed as the missionaries sing “Light Up the Tree” while using cellophane covered flashlights to send dancing light around the room. Then the Mayor, John McCarty, does the honors of flipping the switch, triggering “oohs and ahhs” as the tree fills the room with sparkling light.

Here are a few of the photos Tom took from the balcony.

This is what the tree has looked like for the last week or so. It is laden with pioneer theme kids’ ornaments and surrounded by toys at the base. Such a fabulous tree!

The Jazz Band from Warsaw High School kept the crowd tapping their toes with beautiful Christmas tunes. The provided prelude music as attendees arrived, special numbers during the program, and more music afterward as guests waited for their wagon ride to the sites for storytelling.

Warsaw High School Chorus delighted the crowd with a medley of Christmas favorites.

The tree lighting ceremony is just the beginning of Christmas in Nauvoo. Horse drawn wagons (and yes, the horses are wearing jingle bells!) take you from the Visitor’s Center down Main Street to the historic sites. First stop? The Family Living Center for refreshments and more live music!

After filling up with treats, you can stop by the Cultural Hall to see a live nativity (presented every half hour) then stroll down the luminaria lighted sidewalk or catch a wagon down to the Tin Shop, Print Shop, Post Office, and Browning’s Gun Shop to hear Christmas stories. Carolers gather around lighted fires outside the shops, entertaining passersby with music.

He is the gift—and the best gift of all.

What a wonderful start to the Christmas season…….

The Beautifully Idyllic Green Fields Surrounding Nauvoo

Summer. Oh how I love summer……warm days and nights, sunshine, green growth from under my feet to over my head interspersed with bright pops of pink, red, yellow, orange, and purple blossoms in all shapes and sizes.

It comes and goes so quickly! But, thanks to modern technology, we can enjoy summer moments captured in little digital bytes during winter’s cold days.

This image was another drive-by-and-back-up-and-stop-to-get-the-picture kind of photo. Too picturesque to pass up……the beautiful, idyllic green fields with golden rolls of hay and brilliant blue sky that surround Nauvoo in summer.

This image will get parked on my desktop about the time we get our first snow. Maybe even before that…..
